THE RETURN BECOMES A REALITY: THE NEW KTM 890 SMT
Sharper, slimmer, sportier. A combination of touring, unbeatable tarmac performance and Supermoto heritage, complemented by speed: KTM is excited to bring the KTM SMT back to market, and without compromise. This rebirth of a KTM icon will dominate all road traffic.
An ultimate supermoto bike combined with a range of technical features to suit all touring abilities: this allows you to master any route with ease.
• The KTM 890 SMT returns with the revamped KTM 890 LC8c platform and is designed to reach the top position in the supermoto touring segment in terms of power, torque and weight.
• A road-oriented suspension, adjustable suspension, premium tires and brakes, and other components make this purposeful model, placed between the KTM ADVENTURE and KTM STREET product lines, stand out. The ideal conditions for mountain passes, but also roads beyond.
• The KTM 890 SMT will be unveiled in 2023 at a ceremony and the highly anticipated "Hill Climb" of former AMA Superbike and Supermoto racer Chris Fillmore.
There is only one way to the top. The racing skills of former AMA Superbike and Supermoto ace Chris Fillmore were a fitting means of demonstrating the potential and limitations of the redesigned KTM 890 SMT. The American and Pikes Peak winner led the Supermoto tourer through the Sardinian mountain landscape to show motorcyclists and the industry as a whole what had been missing and what they had been waiting for.
Fillmore launched the high-torque 889cc LC8c parallel twin and used all the power of 105 hp at 8,000 rpm. The engine, with its unparalleled values and performance, comes from the platform of the KTM 890 ADVENTURE models: 20% more rotating mass compared to the KTM 790 platform, which offers stability and safety in the corners. The knock control and 46 mm double Dell'Orto throttle bodies guarantee optimal momentum. At 4.6 litres/100 km, combined with a tank volume of 15.8 litres, fuel consumption remains surprisingly low. The throttle response of the KTM 890 SMT is just as excellent in the low rev range as it is in higher gears. In fact, Fillmore used the full power spectrum of the KTM 790 DUKE's engine to set his second Pikes Peak hill climb record in Colorado.
In terms of chassis technology, the KTM 890 SMT has a CroMo steel frame with a more compact geometry based on the KTM ADVENTURE models. The structure is typically agile and easy to handle, but also provides tremendous stability at higher speeds. The shock absorber is angled wider to reduce the seat height and accommodate the longer swingarm, contributing to a forward-leaning rider position and optimal stability.
The ride of the KTM 890 SMT is a first-class experience: agile, sporty and responsive. The WP APEX suspension (43 mm open upside-down fork with 180 mm travel and the same for the shock absorber) is fully adjustable and fits perfectly with the 17-inch wheels. The Michelin PowerGP tyres offer ideal grip on smooth asphalt and have been specially selected for the requirements of the KTM 890 SMT for their properties and suitability.
The state-of-the-art 5-inch TFT dashboard made of optically bonded mineral glass is scratch-free and anti-glare and can be fully customized. At the same time, the infographic menu system for setup settings is easy to use.
But the bike has much more to offer. The three standard driving modes (RAIN, STREET, SPORT) can be expanded with an optional TRACK setting, which allows the rider to set different accelerator pedal modes and traction control in 10 levels. Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) is an important safety function that reacts to the inclination and behavior of the motorcycle in an inclined position. When trying to test six different handlebar positions in a range of 30 mm, the process can be brought to a halt with the powerful brakes and four-piston calipers that set in motion a 320 mm disc at the front and 260 mm twin-piston calipers at the rear. This braking power is put into action by the cornering ABS and Supermoto ABS, both technically advanced measures that ensure an excellent safety profile.
Other add-ons include heated grips and the ability to expand the software package with Motor Slip Regulation (MSR), which is ideal for better control with low grip and for quick downshifts. QUICKSHIFTER+ and Cruise Control are optional and ready to use with a simple activation process. Good connectivity with the motorcycle means full access to the navigation options and the benefits of the KTMconnect app (roadside assistance, instruction manuals, digital service booklet for service and maintenance).
The optics are not to be left out with all the properties. The KTM 890 SMT turns heads, from the wheels to the sporty graphics, thanks to its supermoto touring style. The SMT has a sharp profile and will not be missed on the road and will be difficult to surpass. As usual, let's not forget the comprehensive collection of KTM PowerParts (accessories and TRACK and TECH packs) and KTM PowerWear. This means that owners of the KTM 890 SMT cut a fine figure everywhere.
