Photos: Kawasaki The new Z900 - a feast for the senses!
Since its release, the Z900 has become one of the most popular naked bikes in all of Europe. Now the successor model is at the start. The goal of Kawasaki's development department: even more riding fun through additional assistance systems and a quickshifter. In addition, the design has been updated in essential points. The SE version with Öhlins and Brembo components will also continue to be offered.
Instead of resting on its laurels, the Kawasaki factory in Akashi has done a great job. This is clear at first glance: The new Z900 sticks to the sharp and angular Sugomi design* of the series, but sets new accents in a targeted manner. High-quality metal elements, a new lamp mask with LED headlights and an LED rear light strip are used.
The 948 cc inline four-cylinder has retained its explosive power, but paired with the precise control provided by the new electronic throttle bodies. Furthermore, the assistance systems can now access IMU data. The right braking power is ensured by radially mounted 4-piston brake calipers from Nissin. The new Sportmax Q5A tires from Dunlop also provide a linear braking feel and plenty of grip in corners.
Another highlight is the new 5-inch, completely digital TFT color display. All information comes together there and is presented graphically in high quality. In addition, the driver can follow turn-by-turn navigation here, which is fed via his smartphone and the Rideology app. The app has also been expanded with voice control**, so that answers and information can now be easily transmitted directly to the helmet via a pleasant voice. Additional comfort is also provided by the standard Cruise Control function.
But that's not all: the new Z900 features updated camshaft profiles that contribute to improved fuel economy as well as higher torque at lower revs. New ECU settings improve fuel efficiency by 16% compared to the previous model – while reducing CO2 emissions. In three selectable riding modes (RAIN, ROAD, SPORT), the settings of the traction control (KTRC) and the respective performance mode are already pre-configured. Alternatively, the above settings can be freely combined with each other in the additionally selectable RIDER mode.
The front seat pad has been equipped with thicker urethane. The standard seat height is 830 mm. In Kawasaki's original range of accessories, a lower driver's seat cushion is available (seat height 810 mm). A fat bar aluminum handlebar also brings improved stiffness and ensures the right naked bike look.
The Z900 SE is equipped with high-quality suspension elements (including an Öhlins rear shock absorber), M.4.32 brake calipers as well as 300 mm Brembo brake discs (the same as the Z H2) and a special colour scheme. As a practical additional element, a USB port can be found as standard in the cockpit of the SE model.
The standard version of the Z900 is still available as a 70kW variant, which can then also be converted to 35 kW for the A2 driving licence class.
