Photos: Suzuki World premiere: Suzuki unveils the new V-STROM 800
With the V-STROM 800, Suzuki presents an adventure tourer that is the third motorcycle model in its portfolio to rely on the completely newly developed 776 cm3 in-line two-cylinder engine. Consistently tailored to on-road adventures, the newV-STROM 800 offers outstanding comfort and driving pleasure on roads of all orders.
Powerful, comfortable and with an excellent synthesis of agility and stability – the new
V-STROM 800 is the long distance travel bike par excellence in the Suzuki portfolio. Its powerful 776 cc in-line twin delivers superbly modulated thrust in a variety of riding situations, while the chassis circles precisely through corners of all radii. A package of state-of-the-art assistance systems helps the rider to fully exploit the potential of his Suzuki V-STROM 800 at all times.
Tried-and-tested two-cylinder engine
Introduced with the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE and Suzuki GSX-8S models, the new 776 cc inline twin has already received numerous top marks in the tests of the international trade press. With its 270-degree firing sequence, the unit now also impresses in the V-STROM 800 with powerful acceleration from low revs and a wide usable rev range. The peak power of 84 hp is already available at a moderate 8,500 rpm, while the maximum torque of 78 Nm is already available at 6,800 rpm. This results in a distinctive characteristic that is just as predestined for exciting solo trips as it is for unforgettable tours for two with full luggage. In terms of maximum smoothness, the patented Suzuki Cross Balancer compensates for annoying vibrations.
Safe on the road with state-of-the-art assistance systems
The electronic ride-by-wire throttle system ensures precise response of the twin. The three riding modes that can be selected via the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) allow the torque characteristics to be individually adapted to the intended use and individual driving style. Thanks to Low RPM Assist, the engine speed is slightly increased when the clutch is engaged, which offers enormous advantages, especially when constantly starting off in stop-and-go traffic.
The standard bi-directional Quick-Shift system enables clutch-free upshifts under load with virtually no interruption of tractive power – for rapid and smooth acceleration. When downshifting without manual clutch operation, the blipper function provides a smooth deceleration.
Adjustable in three stages, the Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) effectively prevents slippage on the rear wheel. In addition, the anti-lock braking system of the Suzuki V-STROM 800 can also be adjusted twice in terms of its control intensity.
Chassis with a high level of touring expertise
The steel frame of the new Suzuki V-STROM 800 is characterized by high torsional rigidity for the best high-speed stability. At the same time, just the right amount of flexibility enables agile handling on winding roads and ensures relaxed driving, even if the road surface is in poor condition. Despite its design for pillion use and the load of side panniers and top case, the rear of the frame is kept so narrow that it allows the rider a sporty, tight knee closure that harmonises with the active inclination of the upper body.
The high-quality suspension elements of the new Suzuki V-STROM 800 master the balancing act between driving precision and comfort with flying colours. SHOWA's upside-down fork can be adjusted in spring preload; In addition to adjustment options for the rebound, the central shock absorber, which is articulated via levers, has a handwheel for convenient adaptation of the spring preload. In this way, the right setup can be realized for every application.
A 310 twin disc brake with radially mounted four-piston calipers at the front wheel and a 260 mm disc with single-piston floating caliper at the rear ensure safe deceleration.
The new Suzuki V-STROM 800 rolls on cast aluminium wheels in an elegant seven-spoke design in sizes 19 inches (front) and 17 inches (rear). The spokes have a V-arrangement, which creates a visual relationship to the model name. The connection to the asphalt is provided by specially developed Dunlop tyres. The construction and rubber compound of the tyres impress with efficient power transmission during acceleration and braking as well as a high level of rolling comfort.
Comfort and practicality down to the last detail
Equipped with a high-quality foam core, the seat of the new Suzuki V-STROM 800 offers a high level of comfort even on marathon stages, which are easily possible, not least thanks to the 20-litre fuel tank. The rubber-covered driver's footrests contribute to the fatigue-free driving experience, as does the height-adjustable windscreen, which has been aerodynamically designed in elaborate wind tunnel tests.
Extensive technologies in use
A five-inch full-colour TFT-LCD multifunction display in the cockpit of the V-STROM 800 serves as a central source of information. The screen provides information about all the systems and settings of the motorcycle and provides important information on the operating status. Two display modes, day (white) and night (black), optimize readability in different lighting conditions.
The lighting and signalling system of the new
Suzuki V-STROM 800 results in excellent road illumination and convinces with long durability. The vertically arranged hexagonal main headlights, complemented by daytime running lights, also give the adventure tourer its unmistakable look.
Competent addition to the Suzuki V-STROM family
As the road-oriented sister of the V-STROM 800DE, the new Suzuki V-STROM 800 offers numerous comfort features such as the height-adjustable windscreen, a comfortable riding position or the seat optimised for long distances. Stable and yet easy to handle thanks to its 19/17-inch wheels, it is designed for use on roads of all orders. With the support of the two-stage ABS, the powerful braking system decelerates powerfully and reliably, even with pillion and large luggage. All this makes the new Suzuki V-STROM 800 a long-distance travel bike for limitless touring pleasure. As with all Suzuki motorcycles, the new V-STROM 800 offers an extensive range of accessories with tailor-made parts packages that allow customization for different application scenarios and needs.
The new Suzuki V-STROM 800 will be available from Suzuki dealers from the beginning of November at a price of 10,600 euros (RRP ex works, plus additional costs).
