Graphic: Motorradtest.deThis was foreseeable: new registrations collapse by 51%!
We had already predicted it at the end of 2024: Due to the changeover to Euro5+, motorcycle manufacturers have made a number of one-day registrations in order to be able to sell machines without Euro5+ homologation at all this year. This is now reflected in the January figures: Only 2,167 motorcycles (everything except scooters and 125cc) were registered in January 2025. Compared to the previous year, a decline of a whopping 51 percent!
The figures are so low that it's hardly worth taking a look at the market shares - we do it anyway: BMW is in 1st place with 44 percent, in December it was still a measly 11 percent. KTM, on the other hand, plummets from 18 percent in December 2024 to 2.5 percent in January 2025. But again, these figures can't really be taken seriously, as they are largely due to the effects of the Euro5+ changeover.
And now there are thousands of motorcycles with one-day registrations in the dealers' yards. This is likely to put further pressure on new registrations in the coming months, because all these machines first want to be sold before the normal rhythm returns. Golden times for motorcycle buyers, because the sale of the "non-Euro5+ bikes" is likely to be accompanied by hefty discounts.
All this also has bizarre effects on the top 50 newly registered motorcycles in Germany. In the top 10 of January 2025 there are only models from BMW and Honda! Among the top 6, there are even five only from BMW. As far as we know, this has never happened before. In December 2024, on the other hand, there were still five KTM models in the top 10. In January 25, the most popular KTM model - the 890 Adventure - is in 38th place with only 12 (!) Registrations.
