two styling studies. Many of these studies had retro touches, for example the Concept R 18According to BMW data, it also gave a glimpse of a production motorcycle that will enrich the BMW Motorrad experience world Heritage in the near future: the BMW R 18.
At the heart of the new BMW R 18 is a completely newly developed two-cylinder boxer engine, the "Big Boxer", as it has played the central role not only in the two concepts of BMW Motorrad – the Concept R 18 and the Concept R 18 /2 – but also in the Custom Bikes "The Departed" from ZON and "Birdcage" from Revival Cycles supported by BMW Motorrad. Now BMW Motorrad presents this new engine in detail.
Not only with its external appearance, but also from a technical point of view, the new "Big Boxer" is linked to the traditional boxer engines, which were synonymous with the motorcycles from Munich and Berlin-Spandau for about 70 years from the beginning of BMW Motorrad production in 1923 until the appearance of the air-oil-cooled successor.
With ohv valve drive and separate engine and transmission housing, the new "Big Boxer" also bears the design features that already distinguished the first BMW Motorrad boxer engine, at that time with side-controlled valves. The two-cylinder boxer engine, which has ever been used in motorcycle series production, has a displacement of 1802 cubic centimetres, resulting in a bore of 107.1 mm and a stroke of 100 mm. The engine power is 67 kW (91 hp) at 4,750 rpm. The maximum torque of 158 Nm is already 3,000 tours. More than 150 Nm can be used from 2 000 to 4 000 revolutions.
