Despite the difficult environment, 169,272 BMW motorcycles and scooters could be handed over to customers.
Despite the Corona pandemic of challenges in 2020, BMW Motorrad was able to hand over 169,272 motorcycles and scooters to customers, thus achieving the second best sales result ever (previous year: 175,162 vehicles/-3.4%). This sales result underpins BMW Motorrad's successful growth strategy. The guarantors for the positive result were the market launches of thirteen new models, the strong BMW Motorrad product portfolio and the worldwide BMW Motorrad trading partners, which, despite the most difficult circumstances, were able to make 2020 a success with tireless efforts.
Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad: "After difficult months from March to June, the entire BMW Motorrad team was able to take the helm with high pragmatic flexibility and great personal commitment. In addition to arguably the best BMW Motorrad product range of all time, it was this team performance that I am very proud of, which made 2020 the second best sales result ever possible."
Dr. Markus Schramm continues: "The market launch of the BMW R 18 can certainly be described as one of the highlights in 2020. Long awaited and observed with correspondingly great interest, the Big Boxer has convinced both trade press and customers worldwide."
Stable sales in Europe with local fluctuations.
With an increase of 1,224 vehicles and thus 27,516 units sold, Germany has even increased compared to the previous record year and remains the largest market for BMW Motorrad. This success also contributes to a pleasing pan-European result for BMW Motorrad.
The effects of the pandemic have affected the main European markets in different ways. While France was also higher than in the previous year with 17,539 units (previous year: 17,300 Eh), Italy (13,918 Eh), Spain (11,030 Eh) and Great Britain/Ireland (7,315 Eh) had to record slightly undeclining sales figures. This results in a slight fall in volume of -5.3% for the whole of Europe.
Positive development in China and Brazil continues.
BMW Motorrad's growth course in the markets of China and Brazil continues. With 11,788 motorcycles and scooters sold (previous year: 8,818 Eh), BMW Motorrad has a proud +33.7% growth in China. A similarly positive development continues in Brazil. With 10,707 vehicles sold (previous year: 10,064 Eh) and growth of +6.4%, the South American market is in the top 7 of the BMW Motorrad markets in 2020.
The boxer remains at the helm.
With a total of almost 80,000 units sold, the boxer models continue to be the backbone of BMW Motorrad's success. The traditionally strong position of the BMW Motorrad typical drive was strengthened in 2020 with the appearance of the 1800 cubic centimeter R 18 engine.
Strong appearance in the segment up to 500 cc.
The single-cylinder models BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS enjoyed unbroken popularity in 2020. In order to be fit for the future, both models were subjected to an elaborate overhaul and presented to the public in autumn 2020 in a new look and the latest technology. With almost 17,000 machines sold worldwide, the two handy all-rounders are a firm fixture in the BMW Motorrad portfolio and continued to contribute to overall success in 2020.
Sovereign debut of the new BMW Motorrad mid-range models.
With the market launch of the new f 900 R and F 900 XR models, BMW Motorrad has hit the mark. With 14,429 models sold, BMW Motorrad was able to further expand its strong position in the mid-range segment. Together with other models such as BMW F 750 GS, BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure, the total share of the two-cylinder series already exceeds 35,000 units.
Outlook for 2021.
Despite the still unpredictable global framework conditions, Timo Resch, Head of Sales and Marketing BMW Motorrad, is also looking forward to 2021: "My special thanks go first of all to our BMW Motorrad trading partners, who were able to successfully shape 2020 despite great challenges with creativity, flexibility and tireless commitment. Together with our strong trading partners, we will once again deliver a large number of strong new products to our customers in 2021. With the M 1000 RR, one of the most spectacular sports motorcycles awaits use in the border area on the racetracks of the world. As a relaxed counterpoint, we send the R 18 into its first full season with a wide range of accessories. With the S 1000 R, we bring a highly emotional and uncompromising power roadster with super-sporty driving dynamics to the market. We will also be presenting some surprises on the subject of e-mobility later this year."
