Kawasaki has been successful in motorcycle construction for 70 years. Now a whole new electrifying era begins: With the Ninja e-1 and the Z e-1, Kawasaki is launching electric motorcycles for inner-city applications that can be operated emission-free for the first time. With this, the Japanese manufacturer is implementing the first part of the path announced at EICMA 2022.
The e-motorcycles were developed for the 125cc driving licence class (A1, B196) and are available as a Ninja or Z version. The basis is a stable chassis with the dimensions of a mid-range bike. Combined with a newly developed electric motor, a driving pleasure is achieved that is typical of all Kawasaki vehicles - in this case without generating emissions.
The almost silent and efficient brushless motor has an output of 5 kW (continuous power) and a maximum of 9 kW when required. A big advantage compared to other electric vehicles is that the two batteries can be removed for charging. Kawasaki deliberately relies on two batteries, as they are easier and more flexible to transport in everyday life than a large single battery.
The drive delivers the power to the rear wheel without a clutch and without a gear shift. This contributes to the "just drive off" character. There are two riding modes (Road and Eco) as well as an "E-Boost" button on the right half of the handlebar. If the driver presses this button, the maximum power of 9 kW is released over a short distance. This ensures fun acceleration values up to a top speed of 99 km/h.
In addition, a "walk mode" is available, which works like a pushing and manoeuvring aid (forwards and backwards). Very helpful in an urban environment, for example in tight parking spaces or when maneuvering on inclines.
The fresh color scheme in Metallic Bright Silver and Metallic Matte Lime Green sets the color scheme for future electric models. The TFT display connects the bikes to the smartphone and provides information about the most important values such as remaining battery capacity, range, availability of the E-Boost function or the selected speed level (Road or Eco). In combination with an easy-to-use throttle grip, a reliable ABS brake system from the 400 cc class and a sturdy tubular space frame, the equipment conveys a feeling of safety that has never been seen before in the entry-level class of electric two-wheelers.
The batteries can be charged via a charger or, even more conveniently, via a docking station that can hold a battery. Alternatively, the charger can be connected to a plug unit under the seat via a suitable adapter, while the batteries remain in the vehicle. The lithium-ion batteries have corresponding charge indicators and are symmetrically shaped to simplify their placement in the battery compartment. There is also practical storage space between the battery compartment and the cover. A wide range of accessories are available for the e-1 models, which include useful solutions such as a 30 millimeter higher Ergo-Fit seat pad, pillion seat cover, higher windscreen, USB port, etc.
With the Ninja e-1 and the Z e-1, Kawasaki opens a new chapter in the company's glorious history and opens the door to an environmentally conscious future on two wheels. Motorcycle fans worldwide will appreciate this. A new electrifying era at Kawasaki has begun.
