Photos: Ducati Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition: A tribute to Ducati's most advanced twin-cylinder engine
A limited collector's edition of the Panigale V2. A sign of recognition and love for the Superquadro engine, the most refined two-cylinder engine ever produced by Ducati. This engine is based on a long series of 90° V2 engines with desmodromic valve timing and four valves per cylinder, which began over thirty years ago and has already made many fans dream.
We are talking about the engines that have given life to iconic motorcycles such as the 748, 749, 848, 899 and 959, to the current Panigale V2. This Panigale, in a limited and numbered edition of 555 pieces, pays homage to the Superquadro engine, whose history culminated with Nicolò Bulega winning the first Supersport world title.
The first Superquadro engine was developed in 2011 for the 1199 Panigale. The name is derived from the large ratio between bore and stroke, which enabled absolute top performance values with a final displacement of 1,285 cm³. Over the years, smaller versions were also developed, first with 898 cc and then with 955 cc. Nicolò Bulega secured the first Supersport world title for Ducati with the Panigale V2 last year. In addition, Ducati won the Supersport title in the US MotoAmerica championship in 2022 and 2023.
The technical solutions of the Superquadro two-cylinder engine have set new standards. The crankcases are manufactured using the Vacural® casting process, with pressed-in aluminum cylinder liners that are coated with NikaSil, which allowed the cylinder heads to be attached directly to the crankcases. The head, clutch and oil pan covers are made of magnesium. All this has contributed to the development of an extremely compact and rigid engine, which is a supporting element of an innovative chassis based on an unprecedented monocoque frame.
Desmodromic valve timing uses "super-finished" rocker arms with DLC coating to reduce friction and increase fatigue resistance. Mixed track/gear control has set new standards in terms of efficiency and reliability.
The 955cc Superquadro in the Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition is a lot of fun both on the road and on the track. With its power of 155 hp at 10,750 rpm and a torque of 104 Nm at 9,000 rpm, it gives the driver a pleasant driving experience.
Ducati celebrates this revolutionary engine with an absolute collector's item. Designed by Drudi Performance in collaboration with the Ducati Style Centre, the Superquadro Tribute livery remains true to Ducati's style language and uses the signature colours: white, red, black and grey.
This livery plays with the graphic of the Ducati logo. The shape of the logo is stretched to harmonize with the shapes of the motorcycle. The number fields follow these lines. The most striking element of the paintwork is the engine graphics applied to the side, which remain in the background with shades of gray and follow the exact placement of the engine. The dark and cold tone of the tank's matte gray accentuates the contrast with the colors of the fairing, giving the bike a modern character. The paintwork is completed by the seat decorated with embroidery, which adds elegance to the sporty style.
Safety and full control of the motorcycle are ensured by the Panigale V2's electronic equipment, which is based on the 6-axis inertial platform. The electronics package includes Curve ABS EVO, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) EVO 2, Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO, Ducati Quick Shift Up/Down (DQS) EVO 2 and finally Engine Brake Control (EBC) EVO. This means that the motorcycle behaves very stable even when the rider performs extreme manoeuvres at the entrance to the corner.
The technical basis of the Panigale V2, which is characterized by the monocoque chassis, is completed by the Öhlins suspension and the steering damper. Rizoma's adjustable rider footpegs are made of billet aluminum. The front and rear fenders, the rear muffler cover, the chain guard, the protection for the clutch cover, the one for the swingarm and the one for the shock absorber are made of carbon. A lithium-ion battery reduces the weight. The Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition is offered as a single-seater. The animation of the display when turned on and the key are unique to this model.
For those who want to use the Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition on the track, it is possible to mount the license plate and mirrors* removal kit, as well as the fuel cap* supplied with the bike, in billet aluminum. The GPS module for DDA data acquisition has already been installed.
Like every Ducati collector's item, the Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition is unique due to the triple clamp milled from solid on which the consecutive model number is written. The motorcycle comes with a certificate of authenticity and a personalized motorcycle cover cloth.
The Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition will be available at dealerships from October 2024.
