Unique atmosphere in the midst of thousands of classics
A feast for all the senses and not only for scene connoisseurs
Open-air museum of the "rolling cultural heritage" awakens memories
The 38th edition of the Bockhorn classic car market from 14th to 16th June proves that you don't necessarily have to be a lover of the "rustiest hobby" in the world in order to feel comfortable here.
It is this unique flair that makes the attraction and success of this event, which is decades old.
People and machines as they could hardly be more colorfully mixed:
This special scene of the whimsical guys with "petrol in the blood" and their adorable "Macke" is worth a trip in itself. Countless visitors feel the greatest joy this weekend to stroll through the meadows surrounded by wallhedges and to rediscover vehicles from long-faded childhood or childhood memories – "Oh look, that's what my parents had, so we went on holiday to Italy without a child seat"... or: "... exactly the color had the car of our neighbors", or "... with the moped I used to board into the disco...", or "... in the back seat of such a car, I snuggled your mother for the first time."
Many aesthetes among the visitors of the Bockhorn classic car market are on photo safari and find "style-life", always framed in "friesisch-green": beautiful, chrome-plated radiator figures, as well as characterful corners and edges of the classics of the last century. There are motifs wherever the eye looks. There is the individualist, who uses his oldie as a normal everyday vehicle and knows how to help himself with everyday repairs – for example on the way to work – with the "on-board tool". Then there are those who turn off the office computer at the end of the day and find their balance in the restoration of something tangible. Sniffing noses that discover one or the other accessory or decorative piece at a booth of the suppliers.
Or the young two-wheelers who do not cover their first motorized kilometres on an Asian "mainstream yoghurt cup", but worship Kreidler, Puch, Hercules, Zündapp, Simson or Vespa. But of course you can also admire investment objects that only find their way back to daylight in ideal weather conditions, in order to finally be able to
dust from the home garage. The area with its 180,000m2 is huge and can hardly be mastered in one day. Every single day of the event offers a special charm: On Friday, the bargain hunters get their money's worth in finding the one spare part that you might not find anywhere else. Here, too, it turns out that "touching is better than clicking", because often the appearance of supposedly unbeatable internet offers is deceptive. On Saturdays there is an exuberant atmosphere in the air and some oldie riders take a lap of honour in the search for the best parking space for his pretty piece. Sunday has a whole series of highlights in the programme: On the one hand, there is the start of the Friesland Rally, which is humorously and with a lot of specialist and background knowledge and becomes a real feast for the ears and eyes through the "Hamburger Jung" Uwe Quentmeier. The trunk sale not only brings treasures from the garage and attic to the light and onthe market, but also offers those with "small" range of goods an easy way to silver it. The path to the classic car often leads via the youngtimer status. The "Classics of Tomorrow" will be presented at the additional youngtimer meeting for vehicles up to the year 1994. The passage through the rows of vehicles once again reveals the speed at which time is progressing. One often wonders how quickly the years go into the country and the former new car has now been on the speedometer for 25 years.
With all these impressions, it will be time to recover and recharge your batteries for the next few hours of sensory flattery. For this purpose, the beer and coffee gardens distributed on the event grounds are ideal. The culinary offer does not include lobster tails and shampoos, but shines with freshness, quality and regionality. The owner-managed gastronomy offers fresh treats from the village butcher from the charcoal grill. The specially freshly prepared farmer's salad according to a house recipe of the Ahlers family is unparalleled, but also the freshly served strawberry cake and the pea soup have meanwhile achieved cult status. A large selection of cold drinks, hand-filtered coffee as well as cakes and rolls, from the bakery next door, round off the delicious excursion. Well strengthened and refreshed, we then head towards the historic camping area in the northern part of the event area. Caravans, motorhomes and buses are not only on display here, but are also filled with life this weekend. Particular attention is paid to stylish camping accessories such as the matching stall, parasol and picnic basket as well as other nostalgic must-have, which reflects the zeitgeist of the time. Get your own picture. Let yourself be captivated by this open-air museum for "Rolling Cultural Property", maybe it will never let you go again.
