2021 New motorcycle registrations
Motorcycle sales & market shares in 2021
The year 2021 is a thing of the past. We take a look at the sales figures for motorcycles and compare them with the figures of previous years. Which manufacturer was able to win, who lost? And which motorcycles were particularly popular with consumers?
The IVM has published the motorcycle sales of December. A total of 116,407 motorcycles (everything except 125cc and scooters) were sold from January to December 2021. This is a minus of 11.9 percent compared to 2020. However, it should be remembered that 2020 was a very good year in terms of new registrations. If one compares the figures for 2021 with those for 2019, this results in an increase of almost three percent. In other words, 2021 wasn't as bad as it seems at first glance compared to 2020.
Motorcycle sales 2019 to 2021 (motorcycles)
It is striking that the "Other" segment is gaining throughout. Among the others are mainly the new brands from China such as Benelli, Fantic, CF-Moto, Zontes and Voge. The motorcycles of these brands are therefore now also in our database or the
motorcycle search.
Let's take another closer look at sales in 2021. Yamaha only has a market share of 7.5 percent, which has less to do with the popularity of the models, but with the limited availability. If it hadn't been for the corona crisis, Yamaha could have sold significantly more motorcycles. Unfortunately, Suzuki's market share continues to go in the wrong direction and is now only 2.9%. This is probably also due to the fact that Suzuki brings only a few new models on the (German) market compared to the other manufacturers. In 2021, Ducati, Triumph and Aprilia in particular were able to improve. These manufacturers have launched many new models in 2021, which seem to have been well received by consumers.
On the other hand, little has happened with the top brands: BMW, Honda, KTM and Kawasaki have so far come through the crisis quite well and together account for 57.5 percent of the market shares. This is also confirmed by a look at the best-selling motorcycles in 2021, where the top 15 includes almost exclusively models from these manufacturers.
