With the Versys 1100, Kawasaki presents a major product innovation for the 2025 model year. As the name suggests, the large Versys now gets an increase in displacement – which also means more power and higher torque. In addition, numerous components on the new model have been updated, such as the quickshifter or the brakes. A four-cylinder engine in an adventure bike is still more the exception than the rule. That's why the Versys 1000 has been a popular alternative to bikes with two-cylinder engines since its release in 2012. Silky-smooth engine running and linear power over the entire rev range are among the major advantages of the four-cylinder concept.
Kawasaki is now tackling this again and increasing the displacement of the new Versys 1100 from 1,043 cm3 to 1,099 cm3. This is achieved by a stroke that is three millimeters longer. The maximum power increases from 120 hp to 135 hp. The higher torque is particularly noticeable in the mid-rev range between 4,000 and 7,000 rpm. The two central intake funnels, which are now 45 millimeters longer than the two outer intake funnels, contribute to this.
The intake ducts have been adapted to the new throttle body and now have a smaller diameter in relation to the larger displacement of the motorcycle. The resulting higher intake speed in the low to medium speed range benefits the torque in these ranges. In addition, the ECU has been tuned for the larger displacement with modified intake timing over the entire speed range. The cam profiles with less valve lift also contribute to the higher torque in the low and mid speed range.
The optimised drivability is also related to the increased flywheel mass. A second balancer shaft reduces excessive vibrations. Large diameter connecting pipes connect manifolds 1 and 4 and 2 and 3, which improves power output. An oil cooler provides additional stability. The brakes have also been revised and the rear brake disc has been enlarged from 250 to 260 millimetres in diameter.
In addition, there are numerous updates that further improve the touring experience. The Kawasaki Quick Shifter (KQS) can now be used from as little as 1,500 rpm. The gear ratio has been selected slightly longer in the upper gears and thus fits even better with the comfortable electronic cruise control. Furthermore, traction control (KTRC), curve management, power and riding modes, a standard USB-C port and – in the SE variant – electronic suspension from Showa are on board. The smartphone connectivity via Kawasaki's Rideology app, which can now be used voice-controlled and whose range of functions is constantly growing, is also very practical and contemporary. All in all, a perfect base for adventure rides!
The Versys 1100 will be available from Kawasaki dealers just in time for the start of the season. The first presentation to the public will take place at INTERMOT in Cologne (5 to 8 December 2024).
