The new BMW R 1300 R: The new Dynamic Roadster with boxer engine is much sportier in terms of technology and appearance with a dynamic design language for an aggressive, sporty design. Four attractive model variants.
"With the new BMW R 1300 R, we have taken the Dynamic Roadster with boxer engine to a new level. Consistently trimmed for driving dynamics, it offers a much sportier driving experience than the previous model with a completely new engine and chassis, while at the same time retaining traditional BMW virtues such as touring suitability and comfort."
Christof Lischka, Head of Development BMW Motorrad
The aim of the development of the new BMW R 1300 R was to make the Dynamic Roadster with boxer engine even sportier and more dynamic than before, both technically and visually. In addition to a much sportier, aggressive design, equipment features such as the Performance model variant including sports suspension, short hand lever, milled and adjustable footrest system, DTC-Shift, two additional sports screens, sports seat, engine spoiler and sports tyres enable customers to increase this dynamic even further. At the same time, it retains its suitability for everyday use and touring, and the new BMW R 1300 R can also be perfectly individualised in this direction by means of heated seats, Riding Assistant, windscreen and a wide range of luggage options.
In addition to the basic variant in Snapper Rocks metallic, the new BMW R 1300 R is available in the Exclusive model variant in Racing blue metallic, the emphatically sporty Performance model variant in Light White uni and the particularly elegant Option 719 Kilauea model variant in Blackstorm metallic.
Sporty ergonomics and equipment for dynamic roadster fun and comfortable touring at the same time.
The new Dynamic Roadster with boxer engine lives up to the BMW Motorrad developers' claim to make the new BMW R 1300 R significantly more dynamic and sportier than its predecessor model, and not only in terms of design, engine and chassis. In fact, the highest importance was also attached to ergonomics with regard to a more sporty and active driving posture.
Accordingly, the ergonomic triangle of handlebar/footrest seat on the new BMW R 1300 R is designed in such a way that the footrests placed slightly further back and the slightly flatter handlebars result in a noticeably more oriented posture towards the front wheel. This results in improved feedback from the front end and thus even better controllability, especially at a sporty pace. Nevertheless, the sporty seating position still allows relaxed touring and cruising, even in pairs. The optional comfort handlebar is also available for this purpose.
Various seat variants for optimal seat height design and new luggage system with electrified suitcases and clever tank bag for comfortable tours and holiday trips.
For many years, the BMW roadsters with boxer engines have earned an excellent reputation, especially among the female clientele as well as among those returning to work. The roadster owes this to its good accessibility and low seat height. For this reason, during the development of the new R 1300 R, special attention was paid to achieving a seat height of well below 790 mm again. In addition to the standard bench seat, other benches are available as individual optional equipment ex works.
For touring and holiday trips, the new BMW R 1300 R can be equipped with a newly developed pannier system and pannier holders as part of the original BMW Motorrad accessories and with a preparation for the luggage system as part of the optional equipment ex works. The capacity of the cases is 26 and 29 liters respectively. Both cases are electrified and allow electric unlocking via central locking. Both cases also have interior lighting. A USB-C charging port is also integrated in the left case. The tank bag is also new. For the first time, it is designed completely strapless and is attached to the motorcycle by means of a tank ring.
Genuine boxer engine with top values for power and torque as well as optimised running refinement and efficiency.
The boxer engine of the new BMW R 1300 R has a displacement of exactly
1 300 cm3 and the ratio between bore and stroke is 106.5 to 73 mm (predecessor: 102.5 to 76 mm). The increase in displacement results from an enlarged cylinder bore and a new crankshaft with reduced stroke. It produces 107 kW (145 hp) (predecessor: 100 kW (136 hp)) at 7,750 rpm, develops a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm (predecessor: 143 Nm at
6,250 rpm), making it by far the most powerful BMW boxer engine produced in series production to date. Its maximum speed is 9,000 rpm.
Three riding modes as standard for ideal adaptation to all road conditions. Riding modes Pro with additional driving modes "Dynamic" and "Dynamic Pro" as well as driving mode pre-selection as optional equipment ex works. Engine Slip Control (MSR) as standard.
To adapt to individual rider wishes, the new R 1300 R offers three riding modes as standard. With the two driving modes "Rain" and "Road", the driving characteristics can be adapted to most road conditions. With the "Eco" driving mode, it is also possible to use the innovative BMW ShiftCam technology primarily to achieve the maximum range with one tank of fuel. As an optional extra, the new R 1300 R can be equipped with the Pro riding modes option, which includes the additional "Dynamic" and "Dynamic Pro" driving modes for a sporty driving style. With the driving mode preselection, the driver can place an individual selection of driving modes on the driving mode button. In this way, a preferred and easily manageable number of riding modes can be configured that can be selected while riding.
The engine slip torque control (MSR) is already on board as standard. It can be used to reliably avoid unstable riding conditions that can occur when coasting or downshifting due to excessive brake slip on the rear wheel (slipping or stamping). In these cases, MSR opens the throttle valves at lightning speed to such an extent that the drag torque is equalized and the motorcycle stabilizes.
Automated Shift Assist (ASA) with fully automated clutch actuation and manual or automated shifting for even more motorcycle experience as an optional extra.
With the Automated Shift Assist (ASA), BMW Motorrad offers an innovative technical solution to make motorcycling easier and more comfortable. In line with the motto "Simplify your Ride", the driving experience comes to the fore even more strongly through the automation of clutch actuation and transmission shifting, without having to forego the dynamics of the gear shift.
Completely newly developed chassis with sheet metal shell main frame made of steel and aluminium rear frame.
The entire chassis of the new BMW R 1300 R has been redesigned. The centrepiece is the new sheet metal shell main frame made of steel, which, in addition to significantly optimising installation space for even more compact packaging, also has higher stiffness values than the predecessor model. In the course of the new design, the rear frame was also completely rethought. The previous tubular steel construction in the new R 1300 R is now replaced by a rear frame made of die-cast aluminium.
Together with the now much more compact drive unit, the new chassis design has achieved a significant mass concentration towards the overall centre of gravity, which is noticeable in noticeable handling advantages. At the same time, the new R 1300 R behaves even more precisely and stably when braking, rides with noticeably less effort and pleases with an even more precise response of the suspension elements.
New upside-down telescopic forks and new rear wheel guidance EVO-Paralever for even greater riding precision. New wheels that are over 1.4 kg lighter.
On the new BMW R 1300 R, the front wheel guidance is provided by a new upside-down telescopic fork with an inner tube diameter of 47 mm. The rear wheel guidance of the new R 1300 R has also been redesigned. Characteristics of the Evo-Paralever are a much stiffer connection via the bearing in the frame that is booked with the swingarm and a continuous swingarm thru axle.
In addition, the new R 1300 R features new 17-inch cast aluminium wheels with hollow-cast spokes. In total, they weigh over 1.4 kg less than the previous specimens. The reduced rotational masses are reflected in improved acceleration and braking behavior as well as optimized handling qualities.
New electronic suspension Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) with dynamic adjustment of damping, spring rate and load compensation as optional equipment. The world's first telescopic fork in motorcycle series production with adjustable spring rate.
Even the standard Dynamic ESA electronic suspension offers a high degree of driving safety and driving pleasure on a wide variety of terrains with dynamic adjustment of the damping and adjustable rear spring base.
The electronic suspension Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) now goes one step further and combines the dynamic adjustment of the damping front and rear with a corresponding adjustment of the spring rate ("spring stiffness") depending on the selected driving mode as well as the driving condition and driving manoeuvres. This makes the new BMW R 1300 R the first production motorcycle whose upside-down telescopic forks allow the spring rate to be adjusted. The adjustable spring base ensures automatic load compensation. With DSA, the driver benefits from even more differentiated handling and greater lean angle.
Powerful braking system in conjunction with Integral ABS Pro as standard. Sport brake as optional equipment ex works.
The new R 1300 R comes standard with a double disc brake with two radially mounted four-piston fixed callipers at the front and a single disc brake with a two-piston floating caliper at the rear in conjunction with the BMW Motorrad Integral ABS Pro. As part of the optional equipment ex works, the new BMW R 1300 R can be equipped with the sports brake. In addition to an even sportier look of the titanium-coloured brake calipers, it offers a slight increase in braking performance.
New full-LED headlights in dynamic octagonal design as standard and state-of-the-art LED lighting units all around. Headlight Pro with adaptive cornering lights as an optional extra.
BMW Motorrad is regarded as the pioneer par excellence when it comes to motorcycle safety and the innovations associated with it. Accordingly, the new
R 1300 R has a newly designed LED headlamp in a dynamic octagonal design with an unmistakable lighting icon as standard.
With the optional "Adaptive Headlights" equipment, the dipped beam of the standard full-LED headlights is optimised for cornering depending on the lean angle by switching on additional LED elements. In this way, curves are almost fully illuminated because the light is where the motorcycle is moving. By optimising the light pattern, the low beam provides even wider and more homogeneous illumination of the road.
Riding Assistant with Active Cruise Control (ACC) and Front Collision Warning (FCW) for safe and comfortable motorcycling as an optional extra.
The new BMW R 1300 R can be equipped with the Riding Assistant for even safer and more comfortable motorcycling. It consists of Active Cruise Control (ACC) and Front Collision Warning (FCW).
Navigation preparation with electric unlocking for maximum ease of use for the first time as an optional extra ex works.
The navigation preparation as an optional extra ex works enables the quick and safe attachment and operation of a navigation device or smartphone by means of a mount cradle. For the first time, this bracket no longer requires a key, but is unlocked electrically and thus offers the greatest possible convenience.
