The new BMW R 12 G/S: Classic enduro design with a design language based on the legendary BMW R 80 G/S. Ideal ergonomics for ambitious off-road riding.

"With the new BMW R 12 G/S, BMW Motorrad offers a classic enduro for purist off-road fun. The abbreviation, borrowed from the legendary R 80 G/S, also stands for 'off-road / road' and signals that the new member of the BMW R 12 family is equally capable of both. We know that many fans have been eagerly awaiting this bike."
Markus Lederer, Head of the Boxer Model Line.

BMW motorcycle and off-road sports. This motorsport success story runs like a red thread through the history of the company. The high-torque boxer engine in conjunction with the shaft drive proved its winning ability and indestructibility in countless competitions.

Nevertheless, it was not until 1980 that BMW Motorrad brought the concept of an enduro with a boxer engine into series production. The BMW R 80 G/S was born. A freely available enduro, the likes of which had not even begun to exist before. Blessed with good off-road competence, travel suitability and dynamic qualities in road use in equal measure. In short, the abbreviation G/S perfectly summed up the all-round qualities of the new motorcycle.

The new BMW R 12 G/S skilfully picks up on this spirit of the off-road enduro with boxer engine in the style of the R 80 G/S in terms of design and transfers it excellently into the present day with modern technology. With long suspension travel, cross-spoke wheels and small compact cockpit fairing.

Three different seat variants, sure-footed enduro footpegs and handlebar risers for dedicated off-road adventures.

The new BMW R 12 G/S is equipped with a flat solo seat as standard (standard seat height with 17" rear wheel: 860 mm / seat height in the Enduro Package Pro with 18" rear wheel: 875 mm). Flat and straight, it offers ideal conditions for enduro riding – even in a standing riding position. In the optional "Pillion Package" the seat is designed for two people (seat height standard with 17" rear wheel: 860 mm / seat height in Enduro Package Pro with 18" rear wheel: 875 mm). In the optional "rally seat" equipment, the seat height for the rider is increased by 20 mm (seat height standard with 17" rear wheel: 880 mm / seat height in the Enduro Package Pro with 18" rear wheel: 895 mm). The standard equipment of the new R 12 G/S includes two practical steel eyelets on the rear frame, which serve as lashing points.

In the basic version, the new BMW R 12 G/S has a rearset system that is primarily designed for use on the road, but can also be used off-road thanks to its jagged profile. As part of the "Enduro Package Pro" optional equipment, the R 12 G/S includes an enduro footrest system, which offers optimal grip for enduro riding thanks to the increased contact surface of the footrest bodies in combination with three rows of points.

Further individual ergonomic adjustments can be made with the tapered tubular aluminium handlebar. The optional Enduro package includes a handlebar riser of 20 mm.

Primitive boxer engine with superior power and torque and single-flow exhaust system.

Since the appearance of the first BMW Motorrad – the R 32 – in 1923, the BMW Motorrad boxer engines have stood for unmistakable, unspoilt design, ample torque curve and unique sound character. This is also the case in the new BMW R 12 G/S. The air/oil-cooled boxer engine with 101 mm bore, 73 mm stroke and 1,170cm3 displacement, which is already familiar from numerous BMW Motorrad models, produces 80 kW (109 hp) at 7,000 rpm in the R 12 G/S and a maximum torque of 115 Nm is achieved at 6,500 rpm. The demand for a classically designed enduro is met by the exhaust system on the left-hand side with a high-lying rear silencer.

Standard riding modes "Rain", "Road" and "Enduro" as well as additional riding mode "Enduro Pro" as part of the Enduro Package Pro. Standard Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR).

The new BMW R 12 G/S already has the "Rain", "Road" and "Enduro" riding modes as standard. The standard equipment of the new R 12 G/S also includes Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which ensures a high level of driving safety when accelerating. On the new BMW R 12 G/S, it can be switched off completely for off-road use. In addition, the R 12 G/S is equipped with engine drag torque control (MSR) as standard.

Shift Assistant Pro for upshifting and downshifting without clutch operation for more dynamics, comfort and acceleration with almost no interruption in traction as an optional extra.

The Shift Assist Pro, which is available as an optional extra for the new BMW R 12 G/S ex works, enables upshifts and downshifts without the use of the clutch or throttle grip in almost all load and engine speed ranges. The advantages are more dynamic and comfortable than with manual gear changes, and the extremely short shift times enable acceleration with almost no interruption in traction.

One-piece tubular steel trellis bridge frame with bolt-on rear frame as the ideal basis for an enduro. Optimised steering head section for the best possible off-road ergonomics and large steering angle.

At the heart of the new BMW R 12 G/S is the one-piece tubular steel bridge frame of the R 12 family. The rear frame, which is also made of tubular steel, is bolted to the main frame. For use in the new BMW R 12 G/S, the steering head section is slightly higher and the steering head is positioned further forward.

Standard 21-inch front wheel for best off-road capability.
Enduro Package Pro as optional equipment with 18- instead of 17-inch rear wheel for maximum off-road performance.

While the other models in the BMW R 12 series are designed for pure road use, the new BMW R 12 G/S with its cross-spoke wheels takes into account the claim to be a fully off-road capable enduro. Accordingly, it is equipped with a 21-inch wheel at the front. A 17-inch wheel is used as standard on the hindquarters. For even more off-road capability, an 18-inch rear wheel is available via the Enduro Package Pro.

Fully adjustable upside-down telescopic forks at the front and Paralever swingarm with diagonally arranged, also fully adjustable rear shock absorber paired with long suspension travel for superior off-road suitability.

In addition to a stiff and stable main frame as a basis, long suspension travel is the be-all and end-all when it comes to ambitious off-road riding. On the new R 12 G/S, the front wheel control is therefore provided by a fully adjustable upside-down telescopic fork with a 45 mm lower tube diameter and a generous 210 mm of travel.

As with the other models in the BMW R 12 family, the rear wheel guide is provided by a paralever swingarm. A directly hinged and inclined shock absorber with 200 mm of travel, travel-dependent damping and full adjustability takes care of the suspension and damping tasks.

Powerful brake system in conjunction with BMW Motorrad ABS Pro for safe braking even when leaning.

On the front wheel of the new R 12 G/S, a double disc brake with two axially bolted 2-piston floating calipers and a 310 mm brake disc diameter ensures confident, stable deceleration. A single disc brake with a 2-piston floating caliper and a diameter of 265 mm is used on the rear wheel.

The new R 12 G/S is already equipped with BMW Motorrad ABS Pro (semi-integral) as standard. This also offers a high level of safety when braking in curves thanks to ABS-assisted braking in a lean position.

Classically designed, centrally placed round instrument and 12 V socket.

The new BMW R 12 G/S is equipped as standard with a centrally located round instrument and a 12 V socket for the on-board electrical system on the right-hand side of the cockpit.

High-performance LED light units as standard and Headlight Pro as an optional extra ex works.

The new BMW R 12 G/S comes with a compact 5 3/4" diameter LED round headlight with an iconic light signature in the shape of an "X" as standard. Furthermore, the turn signals and indicator lights of the new R 12 G/S are also based on LED technology.

Even more safety at night is offered by the adaptive cornering lights in the Headlight Pro optional equipment.
