The new edition of the best-selling Adventure Sport Bike BMW S1000 XR is radically lighter, more manoeuvrable and with an unprecedented spread between long-distance performance and sport.
With a completely newly developed engine and chassis as well as a weight of DIN Leer 226 kg and thus 10 kg less than the previous model, the S1000 XR opens up new dimensions in the Adventure Sport segment.
The new S 1000 XR continues the chapters from Sport to Touring in a new, own way and leaves nothing to be desired – also because Dynamic ESA, Fahrmodi Pro, ABS Pro & DTC, Hillstart Control Pro, a perfectly readable 6.5" TFT incl. connectivity and full LED light are on board as standard.
The newly developed in-line four-cylinder engine is based on the engine of the S 1000 RR and produces 121 kW (165 hp) at 11,000 rpm-1. The maximum torque is 114 Nm at 9,250 min-1. Thanks to a particularly linear torque curve, the speed band could be made slightly wider, fuller and more harmonious in the sense of even better driveability.
In order to reduce the noise and consumption level as well as the speed level, especially at country road speed, the 4th, 5th and 6th gears are now translated longer. In addition to a smoother and self-reinforcing anti-hopping coupling, the new S 1000 XR features for the first time an engine-towing torque control (MSR). Electronically controlled, MSR prevents the rear wheel from slipping due to abrupt gas removal or reswitching.
Just like the entire vehicle, the chassis underwent a vigorous diet. The frame and swingarm were 2.1 kg lighter; at the same time, the motor performs a much stronger supporting function than before. The new two-arm swingarm reduces the unsprung mass by 1.6 kg and offers a particularly sensitive response thanks to direct steering.
The new S 1000 XR already comes standard with the latest-generation BMW Motorrad Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) chassis.
Thanks to the latest valve technology, the versatile Adventure Athlete offers a particularly dynamic driving experience while at the same time providing high driving comfort. Dynamic ESA Pro is available as a special feature with two damping modes (Road, Dynamic) and automatic load compensation.
For the first time on the S 1000 XR, the dynamic brake assistant DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) also supports the driver in braking manoeuvres.
The new S 1000 XR comes standard with four driving modes"rain, road, dynamic and dynamic pro. With the "Dynamic Pro" mode, which can be fully configured for the first time on the S 1000 XR, extensive adjustment options are available.
In addition to gas acceptance, engine brake, ABS control and traction control, the wheelie control (including the new "Power-Wheelie") setting can be configured separately for the first time in the new S 1000 XR. If BMW Motorrad's semi-standard ABS systems already provide a very high level of performance and safety when braking in a straight-line approach, ABS Pro goes one step further and offers even more safety when braking in an inclined position.
The instrument combination of the new S 1000 XR has also been completely redesigned. In addition to an extended range of functions and information offerings, special emphasis was placed on the best possible readability.
For an optimal display, even under difficult lighting conditions, the display has therefore been designed in a large way. It offers customized screen displays for various purposes.
For example, the Pure Ride Screen provides all the information necessary for normal operation on the road, while another core screen allows for inclined, deceleration and traction control. Another possible screen display provides a status overview of the vehicle. A convenient arrow navigation with app is already included as standard. The TFT is conveniently operated from the handlebars via the MMC (Motorcycle Multi Controler).
The ECE version of the new S 1000 XR is based on the latest LED technology (US version has no LED indicators in front). In addition to the flashing lights and the rear light unit, this also includes the luminous headlamp, each with two symmetrically arranged LED units for dipped-beam, high beam and position allott light.
The new LED headlight now illuminates the road even better than before. In the Headlight Pro optional equipment, which is available ex-factory, the adaptive cornering light provides additional safety during night driving.
The driver benefits from better illumination of the road in corners. The Headlight Pro special equipment also includes the daytime running light DRL (Daytime Riding Light) for better detection of the vehicle during the day. ALSO available as optional equipment ex works are LED auxiliary headlights for additional improved visibility at night and better visibility in road traffic.
The new layout of the main frame, the tank flanks and the body parts in the seating area will provide better support and a more favorable knee closure. Optimised contact surfaces and a newly defined ergonomic triangle between the handlebars, the seat and the footrest ensure the best possible ergonomics.
The new S 1000 XR underlines its strong character with dynamic proportions and its formal language is still based on the unique sculptural surface design. Solutions from the touring and GS sector in combination with sporty elements result in a high presence in the overall appearance and embody the wide range of applications.
The new S 1000 XR also reflects its unmistakable character in two different colour settings: in the noble base colour Ice Grey and the very dynamic coating in Racingred/White aluminium, which is available at an additional cost.
