The new Triumph Scrambler 400 X is an A2 bike made in India with a cool look. In contrast to its sister model, the Speed 400, it is larger and offers a much more relaxed seating position, even for taller people. Tanja and Dietmar took her out on a test ride.Strong performance
The new Scrambler 400 X has some important differences to the
Speed 400: longer suspension travel, higher seating position, higher mounted and wider handlebars, exhaust in Scrambler look and, above all, a 19-inch front wheel. In addition, there are Metzeler Karoo Street tires, which not only look very cool, but also allow you to ride off-road. These updates increase the price to 6,295 euros - 700 euros more than the smaller-looking Speed, which is of course designed for the road as a naked bike.
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is available in three colours: red, khaki and black. It is visually very similar to the
Scrambler 900 , which is in a different league in terms of price at 11,445 euros. There are a lot of cool accessories in the Triumph accessories shop, including side bags, windshields and a raised fender/fender. Too bad: Spoke rims are unfortunately not available.

Dimensions and seat test
The seating position of the Scrambler 400 X is extremely comfortable even for people taller than 1.80m. The longer suspension travel (150 mm) and the higher seat (835 mm) as well as the high handlebars allow the pilot to sit very upright and tidy. The seat also turns out to be very comfortable and so longer distances - even for two - should not be a problem. Manoeuvring and manoeuvring is also easy thanks to the weight of only 178 kg (ready to drive). The seat ergonomics of the Scrambler 400 X are without question one of the strengths of this machine.

Technology of the Triumph Scrambler 400 X
The cockpit of the Scrambler is identical to that of the Speed 400. There is an analogue speedometer, all other information including the speed is shown digitally via the easy-to-read LC display. The gear is displayed as well as the fuel level and an on-board computer, which can be tipped through via the i-switch on the left of the handlebars. The traction control can be switched off, as can the ABS on the rear wheel.
There are no driving modes, lean angle sensors and the like, but you don't miss it on a machine with 40 hp either. But the operation is all the easier: After a few seconds you have the machine under control, feel safe and are not distracted by anything - great!
The lighting including the turn signals is completely LED. There is also an LED daytime running light, which can be changed with the low beam via switch. Visually, the Scrambler 400 X looks good - this applies to the light as well as to the rest of this really beautiful machine.
This is how it sounds and how it drives
The sound of the Scrambler 400 X is rather restrained. It babbles out of the double bag, typical for Scrambler, but not too loud and not too rowdy. At 91 dbA, the registered stationary noise is surprisingly low. You can listen to the sound in the upper right corner.
On the road, the low weight and moderate wheelbase become apparent. The machine is very manoeuvrable, although not quite as corner-hungry as the Speed 400. This is certainly due to the 19-inch front wheel and the mixed tires fitted as standard. Nevertheless, with its 178 kg, the Scrambler is super easy and also quite precise to circle through corners. It is not wobbly and conveys confidence-inspiring road holding. Even beginners can cope with this without it being boring for old hands.

The brakes of the Scrambler 400 X don't pull out trees, but they are okay. At the front, you have to grab a bit so that the radially mounted 4-piston brake caliper from Bybre bites into the 300 mm single disc. At the rear, a single-piston floating caliper is at work - a typical spec for an A2 bike. Not so great is the cheap-looking clutch lever, which is also not adjustable in range. It is always strange that the manufacturers apparently want to save 1.27 euros in production costs here...
The landing gear is not adjustable except for the spring preload on the shock absorber. At the front there is a gold anodized USD fork from Showa with a diameter of 43 mm. The suspension travel is 150 mm front and rear, so even light terrain can be traversed effortlessly. Overall, the suspension is a bit stiff without becoming uncomfortable.
The performance of the machine is okay for the A2 class, but we would have liked 45 to 48 hp. The Scrambler lacks the last kick, which you notice, for example, during overtaking maneuvers or in pairs. Okay: A2 machines are never the big burner, but especially with this otherwise so great machine, 48 hp would certainly have been the cherry on the cake.
The warranty on the Triumph Scrambler is a very good four years. The service is necessary every 16,000 kilometers or once a year. These are all good values that are easy on the wallet. We see the Honda CL 500, the Fantic Caballero 500 Scrambler, the Royal Enfield Scram 411 and the Benelli Leoncino 500 Trail as competitors. No wonder that the Scrambler 400 X made it into the top 10 of new registrations in Germany in June 2024: For only 6,295 euros, Triumph is putting a beautiful and well-made machine on the road that should appeal not only to A2 aspirants. At one point or another, you notice this low price, but all in all, the 400 X is a well-made scrambler that is also suitable for taller people.
