Driving bans in Austria: Are motorcycles also affected?
What bikers need to know before starting the Alpine tour
Since mid-June, austria has been subject to weekend driving bans on certain country roads and driving bans on motorways. The aim of these measures is to calm the area off the motorways. What this means for your next Alpine tour you can find out in this article. The driving bans apply to both cars and trucks and motorcycles, but only on weekends in the period up to 14 September. So if you start your tour on September 15th or are not on the weekend, you have nothing to fear. Everyone else should read this article carefully, otherwise it can be expensive.
As you know, the aim of the measures is to keep traffic on motorways for as long as possible and thus to relieve the surrounding area. According to the Austrian authorities, the problem is modern navigation devices, which in the event of a traffic stop on the motorway indicate bypasses and thus draw traffic from the motorway to the country road. In other words, the touris should not burden the municipalities with unnecessary additional traffic, but should remain on the race track. Anyone who does so will face a fine of 60 euros. Those caught will also be sent back to the motorway.
However, if you have a destination in the area, you can of course leave the motorway to reach this destination. This is of course particularly true for residents who are not affected by the travel bans anyway.
These roads are closed - even for bikers
The following sections of the road will be affected by the driving bans until 14 September and will therefore also be closed to motorcyclists:
- L9 (Middle Mountain Road) from Hall towards Tulfes
- L38 (roundabout Ampass Houses)

- Driving ban intersection Patscher Straße-Römerstraße in Patsch
