More than four decades ago, BMW Motorrad founded the new segment of travel enduros with the R 80 G/S. Since then, the BMW GS with boxer engine has been the undisputed leader of the competitive environment. To ensure that this remains the case in the future, BMW Motorrad has opted for an almost complete redesign of the new R 1300 GS, which has saved a whopping 12 kg in weight compared to the previous model.
Once again, the centrepiece is the legendary two-cylinder boxer engine. The new design is more compact than ever before thanks to a gearbox located under the engine and a new arrangement of the camshaft drive. From exactly 1,300 cm3, it generates 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm and develops a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This makes it by far the most powerful BMW boxer engine produced in series production to date.
At the heart of the new chassis is the sheet metal shell main frame made of steel, which, in addition to a significant optimisation of installation space, also has higher stiffness values than the previous model. In the case of the rear frame, the previous tubular steel construction is now replaced by a die-cast aluminium construction. The new EVO-Telelever front wheel guidance system with flex element and the revised EVO-Paralever rear wheel guidance system also ensure even greater steering precision and driving stability.
New electronic chassis Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) with dynamic adjustment of damping and spring rate as well as load compensation as optional equipment ex works.
The previous Dynamic ESA Next Generation electronic suspension already offered a high degree of driving safety and driving pleasure on a wide variety of terrains with dynamic adjustment of the damping and adjustable spring base at the rear. The new electronic suspension Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) now goes one step further and, depending on the selected driving mode as well as the driving condition and driving manoeuvres, combines the dynamic adjustment of the damping at the front and rear with a corresponding adjustment of the spring rate ("spring stiffness"). Load compensation is ensured by the automated adjustment of the spring base. As a result, an inspiring increase in the driving experience on all surfaces was achieved. Whether solo, in pairs or with large luggage – DSA opens up even more driving safety, performance and comfort.
Adaptive vehicle height control and sport suspension as optional extras ex works.
Two additional optional extras for the chassis of the new R 1300 GS are available exclusively in conjunction with DSA as optional extras: the new adaptive vehicle height control and the sports suspension.
Thanks to the adaptive vehicle height control, the new R 1300 GS offers fully automatic adjustment of the vehicle height depending on the operating condition, thus combining the greatest possible comfort without having to compromise on driving dynamics and lean angle.
With 20 mm more travel at the front and rear and an optional sporty, taut sports suspension specially developed for the GS, off-road riders will get their money's worth here.
Four driving modes now standard. "Enduro" riding mode for an enhanced off-road riding experience.
In order to adapt to individual rider requirements, the new R 1300 GS now offers four riding modes as standard instead of the previous three. With the two driving modes "Rain" and "Road", the driving characteristics can be adapted to most road conditions. With the "Eco" driving mode, it is also possible to achieve the maximum range with one tank of fuel. The additional "Enduro" riding mode enables an enhanced riding experience off paved roads with a targeted set-up for off-road operation.
Matrix LED headlights with innovative design as standard, state-of-the-art LED lighting units all around with turn signals integrated into the handguard and Headlight Pro as optional equipment ex works.
BMW Motorrad is regarded as the pioneer par excellence when it comes to motorcycle safety and the innovations associated with it. Accordingly, the new R 1300 GS offers a new, very small full-LED headlamp with a new, unmistakable light icon as standard. This illuminates the road with an unrivalled bright, clear light and also ensures even better perception in traffic. The lighting unit consists of two LED units for low beam and high beam as well as further LED units for daytime running lights and position lights. State-of-the-art LED lighting units with newly designed LED turn signals – integrated into the handguard at the front and functionally integrated at the rear – round off the lighting concept of the new R 1300 GS. With the "Headlight Pro" option, the light of the standard Matrix LED headlamp shines into the curve depending on the lean angle. In this way, corners are almost fully illuminated because the light is where the motorcycle is moving.
Riding Assistant with Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Change Warning (SWW) for safe and comfortable motorcycling.
The new BMW R 1300 GS is accompanied by the new driver assistance option Riding Assistant. It consists of the components Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Change Warning (SWW). Active Cruise Control (ACC) with integrated distance control can be used to set the desired driving speed and the distance to the vehicle in front. The Front Collision Warning
(Front Collision Warning FCW) with brake intervention is intended to prevent collisions and help reduce the severity of accidents. The lane change warning monitors the lanes on the left and right and can help to carry out a lane change safely and supports the view in the rear-view mirror.
The new R 1300 GS: the highest level of travel and off-road expertise in an attractive basic variant as well as the Triple Black, GS Trophy and Option 719 Tramuntana variants.
The new R 1300 GS is accompanied by a completely new design, which on the one hand is based on the traditional GS flyline, but at the same time reflects the extreme compactness and the significant weight reduction.
A key factor in the very dynamic appearance of the new R 1300 GS, which conveys lightness and accessibility, is the flyline with the much flatter tank ramp of the new aluminium tank than in the previous models. Here, it was also possible to set a very sporty and dynamic accent with the texture running in the tank cover.
The basic variant of the new BMW R 1300 GS perfectly embodies what the BMW Motorrad development team has given to the new edition of the Legend GS: compact arrangement of components, high functionality of the equipment and all this concentrated on the essentials. In Lightwhite uni, the new R 1300 GS appears well-trained in combination with its sharply drawn lines and very clean appearance and embodies the theme of boxer GS in the original way.
TripleBlack is the model variant of the Boxer GS that has been popular for many years. In this colour scheme, the new BMW R 1300 GS has a masculine attitude combined with exclusive surfaces.
The basic colour Racing Blue metallic is the programme for the GS Trophy model variant. With the red and white tapes and the lettering in combination with the rear frame with a matt white metallic coating, the GS Trophy stands for maximum performance and sporty off-road use.
With the Option 719 Tramuntana model variant, the new R 1300 GS shows its exclusive and technically elegant side. It combines cross-spoke wheels in gold with a high-quality paint finish in Aurelius Green metallic and high-quality milled parts made of aluminum.
