Yamaha MT-10

Review: Yamaha MT-10 (Baujahr 2019)

The Black Sheep of the Family

The MT series of 03, 07 and 09 is a real sales racer. In the respective price performance class there are few reasons not to buy these bikes. But there is the MT-10 – if the other MT bikes represent the well-behaved daughters from a good home, the MT-10 must have originated from an escapade. How beautiful.

Transformers look

Stand there crisp. The MT-10 makes confident on thick pants, massive and bullish she gives the evil Naked Bike. The Transformer-style front mask plays its part. Yamaha calls the MT-10 "the dark side of power" and in fact the design looks more extreme compared to the weaker sisters. But it is nit-10, because the MT-10 is supposed to be not only a naked bike, but a hyper-naked bike. What at first seems like marketing talk from the can has a real background. Although extensively reworked, the base of the MT-10 comes from the R1 – and thus a superbike. Only without cladding. Oha.

What is still striking is the extremely short construction method. First of all, this leads to a rather non-existent passenger operation thanks to the shortest short bench, but above all to a very short wheelbase of 1.40 meters. Together with the steering head angle of only 24 degrees, this layout promises handiness without end. A quick look at the data sheet: 210 kilos, 160 hp. And so it is clear that today will be a great test day despite the adventurous weather.

160 hp remain

The display is large enough and there is nothing wrong with the operating logic or the readability. The Yamaha MT-10 is not one of the bikes that would be advisable to hire. Three traction and driving modes can be selected to ensure that the whole thing remains mobile. That was by and large with the adjustment possibilities, apart from the everyday things such as the reset of the daily kilometre counter. This apparent backwardness makes life easier, but the old-fashioned look of the graphic is a little disturbing.

A few words about the engine, which is supposed to be the source of all the joy. As mentioned above, it comes from the Superbike R1 with 200 hp. Yamaha does not wrongly assume that Superbike buyers can live with its disadvantages, but this tolerance in terms of rideability in the Naked range is rather manageable. That's why they reworked 40 percent of the engine in favor of a more everyday torque curve. The now collects its identical 111 newton meters at 9,000 revolutions, compared to 2,500 revolutions earlier. 40 hp were lost during the operation - whether this is a disadvantage, we will check at once.

So let's go.

Hyperactive bike

Yes, the Yamahistas got it really nice. The four-cylinder runs a little rough, anything else would be inappropriate for this bike. Of course, the rich sound comes not only from the one litre displacement, but also from the sports exhaust. This makes us want more and we just see no reason not to have fun now besides the creepy road conditions.

When driving off, the Yamaha is a Japanese bike through and through. Will say: The MT-10 is unproblematic and makes every effort not to get in the way of our fun through macken. In the further course of our test drives we will find that the MT-10 is the ideal not-for-bike. Hm? It is not too hard-springed, the engine is not too rough, the sitting position is not too extreme, and it is not prone to surprises overall.

What then is it? She is the mother of all curve robbers. The best part is the way it encourages the pilot to scratch the curves, because it inspires a lot of confidence. Yamaha has managed to maintain the benefits of the ultra-short wheelbase without satiering stability in fast corners or on the highway. The MT-10 always goes like the proverbial sow. Already downstairs it doesn't let anything burn, the torque pushes strongly from 4,000, and when the rev counter leaves the 6,000 mark behind you is one with the holy Madonna of acceleration.

Thanks to the unusual ignition sequence, the engine always sounds appropriately inappropriate without falling into the barrel. That alone is reason enough to keep turning on the tap.

But a little caution is required. Keeping on the bend and braking hard is okay, as there is practically no set-up moment. Thanks to its only 210 kilos, it lays jaggedly in curvy, ground waves can not distract her from a clean track. It is also okay to give full throttle at the curve exit – but please don't get too early: The MT-10 does not have the angle sensor of the R1. The driver has to decide whether the bend is really over, otherwise he could soon be at the end of his road (or lying) despite traction control.

Pure fun device

What is it then?, we asked above. What she is not, comes here: a tourer. In fact, there is a version with a disc and suitcases, but it looks like the designer in charge has just been on holiday. The payload is at 170 kilos anyway meagre. On the other hand, it doesn't matter, because long-haul operations are an ordeal.

Among us, the Yamaha MT-10 is not a sales success compared to its sisters MT-07 and MT-09. Why? It can't be because it's too high for a bike of this class compared to 13,999.

The design certainly doesn't like everyone, but probably the reason lies elsewhere: Whoever buys a Yamaha is more likely to expect the well-behaved daughter from a good house. We, the league of enlightened gentlemen of Motorradtest.de, had bearish fun with the MT-10. Sometimes quite unreasonable!

The test bike was provided to us by Motorrad Ruser in Haseldorf.
