Todays bikes are made out of aluminium, steel, carbon fibre and titanium, much lighter and much stronger. FIRST BIKE The Swiftwalker In 1817 German inventor Karl von Drais invented the first bike called ‘the Swiftwalker’. It had no pedals, the frame was wooden, the wheels were made out of wood with iron rims and leather tyres. The rider walked over the top of the bike and then lifted the feet to go downhill.
